Jefferson County Center for Workforce Development
Adult Success Story

Mrs. Arthunia Richardson was a single, teenage mother of two living with various family members because she was not making enough money to support her family. She put her life on hold and sometimes held two and three jobs in order to send her two children to school.

In 2007, one of her children was accepted into Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, Alabama and the other is enrolled at Miles College in Birmingham.

Also in 2007, she found herself in a job paying $8.75 per hour (the highest wages she had ever made). However, upon becoming frustrated at her working environment, she took the advice of a friend and came to the WIA office in Jefferson County to explore career training opportunities. Through her research she found that truck drivers made between $35,000 and $40,000 a year. This seemed to be a good opportunity so as an underemployed WIA eligible adult she used her Individual Training Account to enroll in classes at Magic City Truck Driving.

Upon completion of training she scored 93 out of 105 on the CLD examination on her first attempt! She has been offered jobs from 30 different trucking companies.

She is pictured below with Jefferson County Workforce Executive Director, Cathy Hulsey (left) and Lawanza Johnson, Jefferson County’s Workforce ITA Coordinator (right).
